Finding Your Way Back to Purpose:
A Values-Based Journaling Practice for Seasons of Job Loss and Transition
Job loss can leave us feeling untethered. Beyond the financial concerns, it can challenge our sense of identity, routine, purpose, and belonging. For those with a history of trauma, career transitions may also activate old fears related to safety, worthiness, rejection, or uncertainty.
When life feels uncertain, our values can serve as an anchor.
Values are not goals to achieve. They are the qualities and principles that guide how we want to live, regardless of our circumstances. While jobs may change, your values remain.
Take a few slow breaths before beginning. Place one hand on your heart and one on your abdomen. Remind yourself:
“I am more than my job. My worth remains intact.”
Step 1: Reflect on What Matters Most
Circle or write down the values that feel most important to you today:
Connection • Faith • Family • Compassion • Courage • Growth • Health • Creativity • Service • Integrity • Learning • Adventure • Kindness • Community • Balance • Peace • Authenticity • Hope • Gratitude
Reflection Questions:
• Which three values feel most important during this season of transition?
• How have these values helped me navigate difficult seasons in the past?
• Which value do I want to lean into more right now?
Step 2: Separate Identity from Employment
Many of us unconsciously tie our worth to our productivity.
Journal:
• Who am I beyond my job title?
• What qualities do I bring to relationships, friendships, and my community?
• What strengths have helped me overcome challenges in the past?
• If my best friend were experiencing this loss, what would I remind them about themselves?
Step 3: Discover Sources of Joy
Purpose often grows from small moments of meaning rather than one major achievement.
Journal:
• What activities help me feel most alive?
• When do I feel connected to myself?
• What brings me peace, comfort, or inspiration?
• What small joys are available to me today?
Step 4: Identify One Aligned Next Step
Purpose does not require having all the answers.
Ask yourself:
• What is one small action I can take this week that aligns with my values?
Examples:
✓ Reach out to a supportive friend.
✓ Spend time in nature.
✓ Update my resume.
✓ Practice yoga or mindful movement.
✓ Volunteer for a cause I care about.
✓ Attend a networking event.
✓ Prioritize rest and self-care.
Remember, small steps count.
Closing Reflection
Take a moment to notice how you feel.
Complete these statements:
Today I am grateful for: ___________________________
One strength I see in myself is: ____________________
The value guiding me this week is: __________________
One small step forward will be: ____________________
A Final Thought
Job loss may be part of your story, but it is not the whole story.
You are still growing.
You are still becoming.
You are still worthy.
Sometimes purpose is not found in what we do, but in how we care for ourselves while navigating change
