Helping Teens Find Calm Amid Summer Uncertainty

Summer is often associated with freedom, fun, and relaxation. Yet for many teens, the loss of routine, school structure, and daily social connections can increase feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

As a therapist, I often see teens struggle during transitions—not because something is wrong, but because uncertainty can feel overwhelming when life suddenly becomes less predictable.

A few ways parents can support their teens this summer:

✓ Maintain gentle routines around sleep, meals, and activities

✓ Listen with curiosity before jumping into problem-solving

✓ Help teens focus on what they can control today

✓ Encourage healthy connection with peers, family, and community

✓ Model calm and self-compassion during stressful moments

One simple question can make a powerful difference:

“What is one thing you can control right now?”

Helping teens build resilience isn’t about removing uncertainty. It’s about teaching them how to move through it with confidence, self-awareness, and support.

As we navigate summer transitions, let’s remember that emotional wellness grows through connection, consistency, and compassion.

What strategies have helped the teens in your life manage anxiety during times of change?

Remember, it’s not about perfection or rigidity, it’s about compassionate curiosity that welcomes your teen intentional connection to you and themselves.
